The AISSR offers one paid PhD position and two Postdoc positions to work on the research project 'The Eating Body in Western Theory and Practice', financed with an ERC Advanced Grant, project leader prof. dr. Annemarie Mol. Starting date some time between April 1 and September 1, 2010.

 (up to 38, max of 1,0 fte)

PhD: completed masters in one of the social sciences and/or philosophy

Post docs: a PhD in one of the social sciences or philosophy.

 

There are three sub-projects involved. (1) The eating body's health: limiting calorie intake versus maximising satisfaction; (2) The eating body and other eaters: on different ways of relating individual and collective; (3) The eating body and its environment: on absorbing food, excreting waste and different bodily boundaries. PhD and Postdocs will be part of the internationally oriented AISSR research group "Anthropology of Health, Care and the Body". 

 

PhD Tasks:

- Engaging in research for (most likely) the sub-project 'The eating body's health'

- Active engagement in the research team

- Following PhD training

- Publishing in international peer-reviewed journals (single authored as well as co-authored)

- Finalising a PhD thesis

- Small teaching task

- Helping to organize (international) workshops.

PhD Profile:

- Holds masters in one of the social sciences and/or philosophy

- Has experience with ethnographic fieldwork and/or the analysis of biomedicine

- Is familiar with science and technology studies, actor network theory and/or another form of material semiotics

- Is capable of working in English

- Is interested in and capable of engaging in true collaborative work.

 

 

Postdocs Tasks:

- Engaging in research for (most likely) 'The eating body and other eaters' or 'The eating body and its environment'

- Active engagement in the research team

- Publishing in international peer-reviewed journals (single authored as well as co-authored)

- Web work for the project

- Organisation of (international) workshops.

Postdocs Profile:

- Holds a PhD in one of the social sciences or philosophy

- Has experience with ethnographic fieldwork and/or the analysis of biomedical, agronomic and/or geographical knowledge and techniques

- Is familiar with science and technology studies, actor network theory and/or another form of material semiotics

- Has experience with English-language presentations and publications

- Is interested in and capable of engaging in true collaborative work.

The PhD will be paid € 2.042,- a month gross (if working full time) in the first year up to  € 2.612,-  a month gross in the last year. 

The Postdoc researchers will be employed through UvA Jobservice for a period of 2-3 years, up to a maximum of 1.0 fte. The salary is € 3.195,- gross (pay scale 11-0, Researcher 3) per month base on a fulltime contract in the first year, increasing to € 3.315 gross per month in the last year.
