John Grin (dean)

Prof. dr. John Grin, (MSc in physics, 1986), obtained his PhD in 1990 at the VU University in Amsterdam on a thesis on technology assessment in the area of military technology and international security. After working on these issues for another two years at VU University and Princeton University, he obtained a post-doc position at the University of Amsterdam, where he became co-responsible for a research programme on the governance of science and technology. Theoretically, this programme included work on methods and practices of policy analysis, especially technology assessment; and on the policy process, especially policy oriented learning and the operation of policy instruments. He has focused his attention throughout his career on the relations between social and technological development.

Currently, John Grin is professor of ´policy science, especially system innovation´ at  the Department of Political Science at that University. Since August 2006, he is scientific director of the Amsterdam School of Social science Research (ASSR). He developed and is running a postgraduate course for practitioners engaged in system innovation. As a codirector of the Dutch Knowledge Network on System Innovations (KSI www.ksinetwork.nl), he is specifically responsible for the KSI subprogramme on governance studies as well as for its interface between research and practice.
