Giselinde Kuipers

Giselinde Kuipers (1971) is professor at the department of sociology and anthropology at the University of Amsterdam. She studied cultural anthropology at the University of Utrecht, and received her PhD in sociology from the University of Amsterdam in 2001. Before accepting this position, she worked at the department of communication studies at the University of Amsterdam, spent a year as visiting fellow at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia (USA), and worked as a researcher at Erasmus University Rotterdam.
 
She has done research in the field of cultural sociology, the sociology of humor, media studies, and the sociology of globalization. In 2006, she published Good Humor, Bad Taste: A Sociology of the Joke (Berlin/New York: Mouton de Gruyter). Since 2004, she has been working on a research project called The Globalization of Humor, concerned with the import, translation, and reception of American television comedy in four European countries: France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Poland. This project is funded by a grant from the innovative research program of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).

Giselinde Kuipers teaches courses on social theory and cultural and urban sociology at the department of sociology and  the International School for Humanities and Social Sciences, both at the University of Amsterdam. She is a member of the editorial board of the Dutch sociological journal Sociologie, of the editorial board of Humor: international journal for humor research, and board member of the Dutch Sociological Association (NSV).
