Matthijs RooduijnMatthijs Rooduijn (1982) studied sociology and political science at the University of Amsterdam and graduated from the Research Master Social Sciences. He worked as research assistant on the departments of both sociology and political science and did an internship at the University of Trento in Italy. Matthijs is mainly interested in contemporary politics in Western European democracies. His PhD project is entitled The Rise of Populism and the Decline of Political Support in Western Europe (1990-2010). Most inquiries into populism focus on the causes of the rise of populism. This project, however, looks at the consequences. The main question is how mainstream political parties and mass media responded to the rise of populism and how this affected citizens’ political support.
