Janneke Verheijen

Janneke Verheijen (1978) graduated at the Cultural Anthropology department of the University of Amsterdam in 2004. She received two awards for her Master thesis on the impact of television on daily life and especially gender relations in a Guatemaltecan village. The thesis was subsequently published by Spinhuis Publishers.

Since 2005 Janneke works as Associate Professional Officer Anthropology at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in Malawi. Here she has been appointed to conduct research within the field of HIV/AIDS and small scale agriculture. Per February 2007 Janneke has also been accepted as a PhD student at the ASSR to conduct research on improving HIV/AIDS interventions for vulnerable population groups. This position is part of the IS Academy HIV/AIDS partnership between the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the ASSR. For both ICRISAT and the ASSR/IS Academy Janneke conducts research on the impacts of food insecurity on susceptibility to HIV among women smallholder farmers in Malawi.
