Johan Heilbron

Johan Heilbron (1952) studied Philosophy and Sociology in Amsterdam and Paris. He was affiliated with the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (1983-85), was a fellow of the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin (1986-87) and the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences in Uppsala (1988-89), and held positions at SISWO, Erasmus University and the University of Amsterdam.

At present he is a fellow at the CSE in Paris; he is also a member of the editorial board of the Amsterdams Sociologisch Tijdschrift. Current research concerns the sociology of art and culture, comparative intellectual history and economic sociology.

He recently published Kunst leren. Het werkplaatsmodel in de beeldende kunst (The Apprenticeship of Art, 1992), The Rise of Social Theory (1995), and co-edited books on globalization (1995) and on Dutch culture and international cultural exchange (1995), The Rise of the Social Sciences and the Formation of Modernity (1998, co-edited with L. Magnusson and B, Wittrock). Recently he has been appointed honorary professor in the social sciences at the University of Utrecht (2001).
