Margaret Sleeboom-Faulkner

The work of Margaret Sleeboom-Faulkner focuses on the two areas of nationalism and processes of nation-state building in China and Japan and on biotechnology and society in Asia. She has set up and directs the Socio-genetic Marginalization in Asia Programme (SMAP) in co-operation with NWO, the IIAS and the ASSR (2004-2009). She publishes widely on the socio-science aspects of new genetic and medical technologies, on issues of ethnic and national identity in East Asia, and on the history of science education in China in international journals.
She has recently published the monograph Academic Nations in China and Japan: Framed by concepts of nature, culture and the universal (London & New York: Nissan/RoutledgeCurzon 2004), edited the volume Genomics in Asia: Cultural Values and Bioethical Practices, London: Kegan Paul (2004), and is publishing the monograph Academic Guidance: The Role of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) in the process of nation-state building (1977-2000) (Brill Academic Publishers, 2006) and writing a monograph entitled Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research in Asia: Implications for global healthcare and science policy.
