• ASSR Board member dr. Herman van de Werfhorst, who has been appointed professor of sociology by August 1st 2007, has obtained a VIDI grant from NWO. this will enable him to build a group working on a project called "Productive Skills, Positional Good, or Social Closure? Three mechanisms for the education effect on the labour market across structural-institutional settings". It deals with such questions whether there are differences between countries and industries in terms of the explanation why education pays off on the labour market. Are knowledge and skills being rewarded, is education a positional good, or does it primarily serve social closure? Herman van de Werfhorst obtained his PhD in sociology in 2000 at the Radboud University, Nijmegen. After two years at Nuffield College of the University of Oxford, he joined the University of Amsterdam's Department of Sociology and Anthropology. See http://users.fmg.uva.nl/hvandewerfhorst for more information.

 

• On the occasion of his Valedictory Symposioum on June 15, 2007, prof. dr. mr. Kees Schuyt has been granted a major royal ('Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw'). It was handed to him by Minister Donner.

• ASSR Alumnus Bowen Paulle has won the award for the best sociologial dissertation of the Dutch Sociological Society. He defended his thesis Anxiety and intimidation in the Bronx and the Bijlmer: An ethnographic comparison of two schools on June 15, 2005.  He shares the award with Frank van Tubbergen.
