Gert Hekma

Gert Hekma studied anthropology at the Free University of Amsterdam and received his PhD from the Faculty of Social Sciences at Utrecht University with a dissertation on the medicalization of homosexuality in 19th-century Netherlands (1987).

He is now on the staff of the Department of Sociology at the University of Amsterdam.

Dr Hekma's work is mostly about the history and sociology of sexuality and homosexuality. The books he has co-edited include The Pursuit of Sodomy. Male Homosexuality in Renaissance and Enlightenment Europe (1989), Gay Men and the Sexual History of the Political Left (1995) and Sexual Cultures in Europe (1999). His most recent book is Homoseksualiteit in Nederland van 1730 tot de moderne tijd (2004). He is writing a book on perversion and editing a book on the twentieth-century history of sexuality. His research focus is on the one hand on the contemporary situation of gays and lesbians in The Netherlands, and on the other hand the biography of the Dutch-Jewish and pederast poet Jacob Israël de Haan, murdered by the Zionists in 1924 in Palestine. He contributes to the English-language undergraduate and MA programmes "Sexuality, Gender and Society" in his faculty.
