Imtiaz Saikh

Sayed Md Saikh Imtiaz (1977) completed his BSS (Hons.) in 1999 from the Department of Anthropology, and MSS in 2001 from the Department of Women’s Studies of the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

His research deals with sexuality in the context of Bangladesh. He wants to make an in-depth inquiry into the interplay of masculinity, gender and sexuality on young men’s sexual behaviour and to investigate the process by which young men and women become vulnerable to HIV/AIDS in Bangladesh. He also wants to explore the influence of hegemonic masculinity/masculinities on the dominant discourses on HIV/AIDS in Bangladesh.

He worked with UNDP, Bangladesh for one year as an intern and then joined the Department of Women’s Studies at Dhaka University in 2004 where he has been working as a lecturer. He has also worked for one year as a Social Scientist in a research project on ‘Pathways from Poverty: Processes of Graduation among Resource Poor Farm Households’, jointly conducted by the Natural Resource Institute, Chantham, UK with Rural Development Academy, Bogra, Bangladesh Academy of Rural Development and Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (funded by DFID).

His present research is funded by the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Bangladesh as part of a project to strengthen the Department of Women’s Studies at the University of Dhaka.
