Irwan Hidayana
Irwan M. Hidayana is a lecturer at the Department of Anthropology of the University of Indonesia. He took a master degree in anthropology at Ateneo de Manila University, the Philippines (1994). In 1998, together with some colleagues, he started a training program on gender and sexuality for 4 years with the support of Ford Foundation. The program is now known as the Center of Gender and Sexuality Studies. In 2003, along with some regional colleagues, he founded Southeast Asian Consortium on Gender, Sexuality and Health (www.seaconsortium.net). He is also become a board member of International Association for the Study of Sexuality, Culture, and Society (IASSCS - www.iasscs.org). His research interests include reproductive and sexual health issues, HIV/AIDS and gender and sexuality.
His PhD research is focusing on sexuality and reproduction among HIV-positive people in West Java, particularly gender inequality and sexual negotiation in managing risk of HIV transmission in the family. This research is part of a larger project of “Towards a continuum of care in Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission Programs (PMTCT): proposal for participatory action-research in Vietnam and Indonesia”, collaboration between Medical Committee Netherlands-Vietnam (MCNV) as the lead party; Hanoi Medical University, Vietnam; Pelita Ilmu Foundation, Indonesia, Department of Social Welfare, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia, and Medical Anthropology Program, University of Amsterdam as lead technical support. It is funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
